Design by Victoria Gibson
For over five decades, Victoria Gibson has been a leading figure in knitwear design, known for her expert use of colour and innovative approach. Victoria’s real passion for the creative process resonates in her blending of vibrant colours, textures and patterns.
Her journey into textiles began with studies at the Slade School of Art and Central School of Art in London, but it truly evolved when she moved to Shetland in the late 1960s, where she found a way to connect modern trends with traditional local craftsmanship. Victoria’s bold and random stripes broke away from conventional patterns and brought an unexpected playfulness to her work. She collaborated closely with Shetland knitters, giving them the creative freedom to experiment with colour combinations and design details, resulting in jumpers that were not only visually striking but subtly unique. Her distinctive designs quickly gained attention and were sought after by prestigious London boutiques such as Tigermoth and Clothkits, launching her successful career.

Victoria consistently pushed the boundaries of knitwear, introducing hand-knitted, textured pieces that revived and reimagined Shetland’s craft heritage. Her design process was highly original, drawing inspiration from an eclectic range of sources – showcasing her belief that true colour inspiration comes from life itself.
Victoria’s influence on Shetland textiles runs deep. By stepping away from tradition, she inspired a new generation of designers to experiment with colours, patterns and textures in exciting ways. Her unique approach continues to shape the industry, leaving a lasting impact that will be felt for years to come.
